The people of the Netherlands, a small country in Europe, have been a significant part of the bead world. Archaeological excavations in old Amsterdam revealed the existence of glass bead making in the late sixteenth century. At a dusty and dirty piece of land in the Waterlooplein, www.waterloopleinmarkt.nl, an old Jewish quarter, many glass beads and glass chips as well as glass rods were found. They dated from 1580 - 1585, the earliest evidence of bead making uncovered in Amsterdam we believe. Amsterdam is a town worth visiting and will leave a life-long memory of the Dutch culture. The Dutch straight-forward attitude is something you will never forget! Excavations at the Keizersgracht, www.planetware.com, which is a wide street divided by a canal in the middle, revealed evidence that a bead-making factory, produced more than fifty thousand whole and fragmentary drawn beads (glass beads), including the finds, production wastes and fragments. Dutch bead-making was short, but very strong and made a strong point in the history of the country. Soon the Venetian glass makers from Murano joined the Dutch making beads along with the French and English.
