Let's start with the first two words: "My Horse" and see how we can explain this very fragile animal. Palpation along the spinal column down the center of the back will reveal elevations or bumps even though the top feels level. A prominent vertebra might tell you that it has moved out of its position. Horses that are used for jumping on an ongoing basis and started prematurely at a young age very often suffer from the "hunter's bump". If you notice that the horse is also stiff in the lower back, the prominent vertebrae may signal the need for some chiropractic adjustments.
A word of warning!!!!Please, provide your horse with the proper recovery time after the treatment. It's NOT a good idea to go for the full blast right after the treatment. Chiropractic adjustments are doing wonders for horses if you as the horse owner are willing to be patient with the healing process!
If you compare the two prominences at the top of the hips, they should be level at all times. If one side is higher than the other side, that may indicate that the pelvis has rotated, which can create major back problems, saddle problems, etc., etc. Eighty-five percent of problems we encounter in our sport or show horses is all related to back problems! An excellent test on a daily basis, or before and after riding, is simply to run your hand over the horse's back, with some pressure. If the horse wants to move his back away from you, that means>>>>>'TROUBLE'!
This horse is absolutely NOT a happy horse. His/her ears are talking to you. Can we blame the horse? NO, we cannot! Every horse is born with a great personality. UNFORTUNATELY, it's the caretaker that can ruin a horse in less than a week.............It breaks my heart all the time!
Stress can be the result of many back problems. There is another great and simple way of finding out if your horse has back problems, but be sure THAT YOU KNOW YOUR HORSE before you take the following action:
Stay behind your horse. Hug his/her rear, making sure that he/she knows it is you, the owner. Pet the tail and slowly with the tail in your hand walk backwards. Once you can go no further, with the tail still in your hands, give a firm tug. It creates freedom in the tail and releases some stress in the spinal cord, because, as you know, the tail is an extension of the spinal cord. Play with the tail, turn it around, move it from left to right and create confidence in that part of the body between horse and owner.
